Dedicated Volunteer Leadership Supporting Weekend Camping and Safety
Weekend camping is where Scouting comes alive! Every weekend during the year, dozens of Cub Scout packs, Scouts BSA troops, and Venturing crews head out to Quail Hill Scout Reservation and Forestburg Scout Reservation for outdoor adventures, skill building, and fellowship.
Serving as the friendly, reassuring face of the council during these weekend campouts is The Campmaster Corps—a dedicated group of selected, trained adult Scouters who serve as hosts, safety advisors, and facility directors at our camping properties.
What Does a Campmaster Do?
Campmasters serve on rotation during weekend camping sessions (Friday evening through Sunday morning). Working alongside our full-time Camp Rangers, Campmasters ensure that every unit’s stay is smooth, safe, and memorable.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
⛺ Unit Check-In & Orientation: Welcoming incoming troops and packs, assigning campsites or winter cabins, reviewing camp guidelines, and issuing facility keys.
🛠️ Facility Support & Troubleshooting: Assisting unit leaders with campsite needs, equipment access, and working directly with the Camp Ranger to address maintenance issues.
🛡️ Health & Safety Oversight: Monitoring weather alerts, ensuring basic camp safety procedures are followed, and serving as a local point of contact during emergencies.
🌲 Activity & Program Assistance: Offering advice on local hiking trails, camp service project opportunities, or shooting sports range availability.
🚪 Unit Check-Out: Conducting final site inspections alongside unit leaders on Sunday morning to ensure facilities are left clean and in good order.
Who Can Become a Campmaster?
The Campmaster Corps is composed of experienced, enthusiastic adult Scout leaders who enjoy camp life and want to give back to the Scouting community.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Must be a currently registered adult leader in Scouting America (age 21+).
Must be fully up to date on Youth Protection Training (YPT).
Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, a helpful service mindset, and sound judgment.
Must complete the council’s Campmaster Training Course (covering camp emergency procedures, facility operations, and administrative check-in routines).
