Growing Scouting, Welcoming Families, and Building Strong Local Units

The Council Membership Committee is dedicated to expanding the reach of Scouting America across our local communities. Our mission is to ensure that every youth—regardless of background—has the opportunity to experience the character-building, leadership development, and outdoor adventure that Scouting provides.

From coordinating community-wide recruiting drives and welcoming new families to helping chartered organizations start new units and supporting unit retention, our committee works hand-in-hand with district leaders, volunteers, and parents to grow the Scouting movement.

What We Do

The Membership Committee focuses on three main pillars to strengthen local Scouting:

  • Youth & Family Recruitment: Organizing seasonal “Join Scouting” campaigns, elementary school night presentations, community event booths, and digital marketing outreach to invite new families to join.

  • New Unit Development: Partnering with local schools, places of worship, civic organizations, and community groups to charter new Cub Scout Packs, Scouts BSA Troops, Venturing Crews, and Exploring Posts.

  • Unit Health & Retention: Monitoring membership trends, supporting unit leaders during annual rechartering, and providing resources to keep current members engaged and active.

  • Recruitment Toolkits & Flyers: Access customizable school flyers, yard signs, peer-invitation cards, and digital graphics for social media campaigns.

  • Join Scouting Night Guides: Step-by-step playbooks for running smooth, effective, and welcoming registration nights for new parents and youth.

  • BeAScout.org Optimization: Guidelines for unit leaders on updating their BeAScout.org pin, ensuring interested families can easily find and contact your unit.

  • New Family Welcome Packets: Onboarding templates and checklists to help new parents feel oriented and included from day one.

Get Involved in the Membership Committee

Are you passionate about community outreach, public speaking, or helping new families feel welcome? We are looking for energetic volunteers to join our council and district membership teams!

Volunteer Roles Needed:

  • School Coordinators: Building relationships with local school principals and PTA/PTO boards to arrange recruitment visits.

  • New Unit Organizers: Helping community organizations start and charter new Scout units.

  • Membership Mentors: Assisting struggling units with recruitment events and retention strategies.

  • Community Champions: Representing Scouting America at local fairs, town days, and civic events.
