BB Gun & Archery Range Master Training
Empower Safe, Fun Shooting Sports Adventures for Cub Scouts
Shooting sports are consistently rated among the most popular activities in Cub Scouting. The BB Gun & Archery Range Master Training course equips adult leaders and volunteers with the essential skills, safety knowledge, and practical experience needed to run safe, engaging archery and BB gun ranges at council and district events.
⚠️ BSA Policy Note: Cub Scouts are only permitted to participate in archery and BB gun shooting sports at official council- or district-sponsored events. All range operations must be supervised by a certified BSA Range Master.
What You Will Learn
This hands-on training combines classroom safety instruction with practical on-range execution. During the course, participants will learn:
Range Safety & Setup: Establishing safe range layouts, emergency procedures, flag signals, and perimeter control.
Equipment Maintenance & Storage: Proper inspection, care, sizing, and storage of bows, arrows, BB guns, targets, and protective gear.
Range Commands & Coaching: Standardized range commands, shooting techniques, and how to coach young Scouts with positive reinforcement.
Event Management: Running efficient range rotations for Cub Scout day camps, camporees, and council family campouts.
Course Requirements & Certification
Eligibility: Open to all registered adult leaders and parents aged 18 and older.
Certification Period: Upon successful completion of the training and practical range evaluation, participants receive a BSA Range Master Certification, valid for two years.
Prerequisite: Participants must complete current BSA Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) prior to attending.
