Empowering Patrol Leaders to Build Strong, Youth-Led Troops

Patrol Leadership Skills (PLS) is an interactive, council-developed training program designed specifically for young leaders in Scouts BSA. Developed right here by Monmouth Council, this hands-on course bridges the gap between basic troop-level training and advanced youth leadership programs like NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training).

 

Why attend Patrol Leadership Skills?

Scouts will learn to work with other scouts in a Patrol while gaining an understanding of the key leadership roles within a Scouts BSA Troop.  Scouts will also learn several outdoor skills in a Show & Do environment.    
 

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how the Patrol Method works within a Troop.

  • Gain an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader and Troop Guide positions within the troop and their role within the Patrol Leaders’ Council (PLC).

  • Learn how to plan and run a campfire.

  • Scouts will also learn several outdoor skills in a Show & Do environment.

Who should attend?

This course is ideally suited for Scouts who are stepping into leadership positions within their home troops, including:

  • New leaders and potential leaders between the ages of 11 and 14.

  • Scouts preparing to take National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) in the future

Prerequisites:

  • Active membership in a Scouts BSA Troop as the course is taught from that point-of-view.

  • Recommendation from your Scoutmaster.

  • Completion of Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) is recommended.
