Den Chief Training

Inspire the Next Generation of Scouts!

A Den Chief is a vital leadership link between Scouts BSA (or Venturing/Sea Scouting) and Cub Scouting. Serving as a role model, big brother or sister, and assistant to the Den Leader, a Den Chief plays a key role in helping Cub Scouts have fun, learn new skills, and transition smoothly into a Scouts BSA troop.

This interactive training course gives prospective and current Den Chiefs the tools, games, leadership techniques, and confidence needed to succeed in their role!

Who Should Attend?

  • Scouts BSA members (First Class rank recommended, but open to all qualified Scouts)
  • Venturers & Sea Scouts interested in serving a Cub Scout Den
  • Adult Leaders & Den Leaders are also welcome to attend to learn how to best utilize a Den Chief within their den!

What You Will Learn

This dynamic training course prepares youth leaders to step into their den with enthusiasm and purpose. Participants will discover:

  • Roles & Responsibilities: Understand how the Den Chief fits into the Pack, Den, and Troop structures.

  • Den Meeting Activities: Learn how to lead games, ceremonies, tricks, songs, and outdoor skills that keep Cub Scouts engaged.

  • Positive Behavior Management: Master age-appropriate techniques for keeping Cub Scouts focused, safe, and having fun.

  • Webelos to Scouts BSA Transition: Discover how to mentor older Webelos/Arrow of Light Scouts and prepare them for their next step in Scouting.

  • Working with Adult Leaders: Build effective communication and teamwork skills to partner successfully with the Den Leader and Cubmaster.

Course Requirements & Preparation

To get the most out of the course, participants should bring:

  • Official BSA Uniform: Wear a full field uniform (Class A).

  • Den Chief Handbook: Bring your handbook (available at the local Scout Shop or online).

  • Paper & Pen: For taking notes and writing down activity ideas.

  • Positive Energy: Come ready to participate in games, songs, and group challenges!
