District Award of Merit

Recognizing Outstanding Service at the District Level

The District Award of Merit is the highest honor a local Scouting district can bestow upon an adult volunteer. Presented annually by the National Court of Honor upon the nomination of the local district, this award recognizes Scouters who have rendered noteworthy service of an exceptionally high character to youth at the district level.

While unit leaders are often recognized for their impact on individual packs, troops, or crews, the District Award of Merit honors those selfless individuals whose work behind the scenes keeps entire districts running smoothly, growing, and thriving.

Eligibility & Nomination Criteria

The District Award of Merit is awarded based on exceptional service within the district, alongside noteworthy contributions to the broader community.

To be eligible for the District Award of Merit, a nominee must meet the following requirements:

  • Registered Scouter: Must be a currently registered adult volunteer with Scouting America, aged 21 or older.

  • Service Scope: Must have rendered noteworthy service of an exceptional character to youth within the district. (Service may be rendered to youth directly or indirectly through district leadership roles).

  • Civic Leadership: Outstanding personal achievements and service to civic, religious, educational, professional, or charitable organizations outside of Scouting are also considered.

  • No Self-Nomination: Candidates cannot nominate themselves. Nominations must be submitted by fellow Scouters, parents, or district volunteers.

  • Professional Scouter Ineligibility: Professional Scouting employees (District Executives, Scout Executives, etc.) are not eligible for this award.
