North Star Award

The Silver Buffalo Award

Recognizing Extraordinary Non-Scout Community Service to Youth

The North Star Award is a distinguished national award presented by local councils to non-Scout individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to Scouting America and the youth of our community.

While awards like the Silver Beaver recognize registered adult leaders within the organization, the North Star Award is specifically designed to honor non-members—civic leaders, philanthropists, community advocates, and corporate partners—whose selfless support and outstanding service have made a lasting, positive impact on Scouting programs.

Eligibility & Nomination Criteria

The North Star Award serves as the non-member equivalent of major council-level adult recognitions.

To be eligible for the North Star Award, a nominee must meet the following criteria:

  • Non-Member Status: Must not be a registered adult volunteer in Scouting America at the time the noteworthy service was rendered.

  • Significant Impact: Must have provided exceptional, unselfish service of a high character to local youth through contributions to the council, districts, or local units.

  • Community Leadership: Candidates demonstrate strong character, civic involvement, and a commitment to helping young people succeed.

  • No Self-Nomination: Nominations must be submitted by a registered Scouter, council committee, or local Scouting unit.
